
DeWitt started performing on stage at the age of 13. When she was 13 she began performing on the stage. She graduated with an undergraduate degree from Ball State University. During her summer stock performance she was persuaded by the director to apply to UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt claimed she did not meet actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She worked as secretary while at UCLA. Dewitt's portrayal of Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-84 season is the one that made her the most well-known. She was cast in the pilot episode of the show and later employed. Janet was also featured in an episode of The Ropers in which she starred in during 1979. After Three's Company ended in 1984, DeWitt appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves in the year 1984, after which she quit acting for a while. In June 1991 she resumed acting by appearing in Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. After that she was a part of the TV comedy Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain aired an episode in 1997 that featured a character based upon her. The voice actor was another actress. She was in an episode Cybill and made a brief appearance in Living Single's final episode. The 2000s work of her include television shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
